Informative: Newscast

Kenzie: Breaking news! Man alleged to be a human trafficker after a girl escaped and came to authorities asking for help. Lauren, which is not her real name, is one of hundreds of young New York girls who have been abducted from their normal lives and made into various slaves. And now we have Brittany Baker for more on the topic.

Brittany: Yes, hello. Human Trafficking is the act of kidnapping and selling people. They usually use threats and bribery.

Kenzie: Who is targeted?

Brittany: Kids are targeted more than adults because of easy persuasion. The trafficker would tell children things like “you would have fun.” The FBI guesses that more than 100,000 children are taken and forced to do unimaginable things. Although kids are mainly targeted, women are also targeted at bars, cafes, clubs, and just in the general public.

Kenzie: What are the ages that are usually trafficked?

Brittany: The ages range from 9 to 19. 2/3 of trafficked children are abused. They eventually develop mental health problems, engage in prostitution as adults or commit crimes later on in life. Please take a look at this chart and see the types of human trafficking.

*Puts up chart for about 10 seconds*

Kenzie: There are a quite a few types of trafficking as you just saw. 75% of those people are for sexual exploitation.

Brittany: Well what exactly is human trafficking?

Kenzie: Trafficking consist of basically personal pleasures such as prostitution and labor. But a lot of it is also selling organs, forced marriage, or criminal activities. In the world there are estimated 27 million people trapped in slavery at the moment.

Brittany: How much money has been spent on human trafficking exactly?

Kenzie: If you added up all the money spent around the world for trafficking, it would add up to 31.7 million United States dollars. But in Latin America sexual exploitation became a 16-billion dollar business in 2005

Brittany: Now that is all we have for today. Please tune in for more on this topic when the special “Patterns in History: Human Trafficking” where we follow Lauren’s story on Saturday at eight o’clock PM. Thank you for watching and have a good night.

Personal Artifact: Death Note

Dear God,
Well it is me again, Sarah Wall, the girl you no longer listen to. I have one question for you. One that is it.  Why?  Why do you not help me?  I have prayed every minute of every day for someone to find me and rescue me.  For two unbearable years I have done that with no answer.  I have been trapped and alone. I have lost everything.  My faith in you gone like a leaf in the wind.  I don’t even know why I am writing this to you now.  It isn’t like you have listened to me the past two miserable years of my life.  Everything is dark and cold, so very cold.  Every night I am sold as if I were a candy bar in a store.  Sometimes I even have to sell myself because he threatens if I didn’t meet the quota then they would kill him.  I am not looked at as a human being, but as a possession being sold over and over and over again.   If you really existed you wouldn’t have let this happen to me or anyone.  I no longer have any will to live. Why … because I found out my little brother was killed by the very man who promised he wouldn’t be hurt if I met quota.  They took us together, but spilt us apart just as fast.  Charles, my brother, was my only reason to live to meet quota each night.  Now he is gone, and now I will be too.  By this time tomorrow I will be no more than a body on the floor of a cold, empty, dark room.  I write this too you because no one else cares.  Even if you don’t either.  Since you made me go through this agony.  You obviously want me to die since you took away my only reason for living… my brother.  I bet our parents have stopped looking for us.  I even bet our parents don’t remember us and have moved on.  I am not afraid of death. Death can’t scare me because of what I have seen and what I have had to do.  My life is one big dark endless hole.  If you can even say I am living.  I am more like a zombie.  No freedom and little food or drink.  I still breathe yet I feel more dead than alive.  He was my only reason to live.  To get back to him and hold his hand and walk side by side.  Now you have taken him and with that my will to survive and carry on.  My hope is gone.  The last of it died with the death of Charles.  That last hope I would get to see him is gone forever. There is no way I can believe in a god who would let this happen.  It is time I say goodbye to someone who I no longer believe in.
                                                                                No Longer Yours,

      Sarah Wall

Starter Post

We are Brittany Baker and Mackenzie Reinhart. We attend New Riegel High School as freshmen. Our Language Arts class is doing a project on Patterns in History and our topic is Human Trafficking. Our class has also previously read Night by Elie Weisel. It is the story of a holocaust survivor. We are looking into modern topics that reveal similar, repetitious patterns of history. For this project we are posting artifacts (projects) on our blog. This project is a great way of learning about this subject.

We choose 4 projects from 4 different categories. The first category is informative. We are to present facts and not opinions. It basically explains what this topic is. The next category is personal. We have to act like the victim and tell their story. It is meant to be very emotional. The third category is evaluation. We have to compare and contrast patterns amongst both the topic and the holocaust telling what the leaders were like, who was targeted and why, how they maintained power, and how they obtained power. The last category is How-to. We tell how to make a change. We explain how we can help victims, help stop the topic, and stop it from happening in the future. I hope you enjoy what we are going to post. Thanks!
